Carter's Random Thoughts

Some darn good HOT Salsa

If you like Salsa that is full of flavor and burns your mouth, try Jolokia10 Salsa It is made by CaJohns

Unlike many hot sauces, this actually has flavor and then has a burn. The habaneros, jalapenos and the bhut jolokia chiles.  The bhut jolokia chilies are what really give it the kick.

Christmas brisket

(download)

Smoked brisket all night starting Christmas eve. It turned out pretty darn good considering it was 34 degrees most of the night and the grill temp bounced around. The stoker box did a great job at keeping it from dropping too low.   For a while during the night the temp jumped up and down even with the smoker jacket.  The jacket helps insulate the smoker and keep the temperature steady.  To be on the safe side I lowered the temp down to help keep it from bouncing and then raised it back up when the sun came back out.

After cooking all night we let it rest in the cooler with blankets around it.

We got the meat from Hill's meat market and next time we order the meat, I need to make sure they write down on the order sheet to leave it untrimmed.  While it was good I think it could have been better if more of the fat was left on.

Once again, I took pictures of before during but forgot the after shots.  Probably because I was so eager to just eat it.

Finally found one

Finally found one of the elusive Ikea Jerker shelf systems.  Works PERFECT for the office stereo and Home(office) theater PC.  The monitor and keyboard fit nice on the top, the apple tv and the Veebeam HD box on the next shelf.  The Sony receiver and the PC and UPS on bottom shelf.

Weekend in Chicago

Amy and I went up to Chicago for the weekend and had a good time.  It was a top down day on Friday and Lexy got to smell all of the smells without having to stick her head out the window.

Friday we went and saw Bug by Tracy Letts at the RedTwist Theatre in Chicago. It was another one of those super small theatres where you are part of the set.  There was a movie made from the play back in 2006 with Ashley Judd and Michael Shannon.  Right before the play started Tracy Letts showed up to watch the play so that was pretty cool.  For dinner we went to Little Mexican Cafe

Saturday we went to Old Town Art Fair and saw some really nice art along with seeing the nice houses in the Old Town neighborhood. For lunch we went to the Twin Anchors Tavern.  The building dates back to 1881 and the tavern opened in 1932 and is one of the oldest restaurants in Chicago.  Since we were going to rib fest on Sunday I elected to have BBQ chicken instead and tried their new prohibition Sauce which was very sweet and then produced a little heat.  It was good.  Their zesty sauce was unique in that it tasted like it had lots of cinnamon in it.  Saturday evening we went to have Beijing Duck Feast at Sun Wah BBQ.  The duck is carved at table side and served with a bun, garnishments, hoisin sauce.  The crispy duck skin was really good.  The carcass is taken back to the kitchen and duck fried rice, duck soup and a Lo Mein dish is then brought out.  There was so much food and we ran out of places to put it.  It was my first time having duck and it was very good.

Sunday we went down to Ribfest and sampled some ribs.  I tried Celtic Crown, Corner 41 Bar and Grill, Rub BBQ Company, The Smoke Daddy.  We also got to try bacon wrapped wings from the Wright company's semi smoker.

We did not pull the car out at all after parking Friday and took the L and the bus to get everywhere.  It was pretty pleasant this time.  Strangely enough in a city as large as Chicago we did get the pleasure of seeing  someone on the bus who we had the pleasure of smelling last year.  He looked exactly the same although we did not have the pleasure of smelling him this time :)

Griot's Heavy-Duty Wheel Cleaner

Just tried Griot's Garage Heavy-Duty Wheel Cleaner. My rims were not super dirty and probably did not need the Heavy-Duty Wheel Cleaner but I figured I would give it a try. The first thing I noticed is that unlike other heavy duty wheel cleaner I did not choke when breathing in the mist.  Like all Griot's products it has a pleasant aroma, but I have not quite decided what it smells like.  After spraying it on it starts to change color reacting with the iron particles. I let it sit for a few moments and then wiped down the back of the pillars with the lambs wool mitt and then rinsed down the rims and the rims were pretty clean.  It probably helped that the rims were cleaned / waxed before going on the car for the summer and the car gets washed every week.  But one area it did seem to make a difference was on the calipers.  I have standard stock calipers (not painted) and the grime just dripped off.  All and all I will keep a bottle of this in my stock of cleaning supplies to use once a month on my car.  Where I think I will get more use out of it is on other family members cars which are not washed as frequently.

Car detail day

Finally after 3 weeks of having my new car i was able to do the first round of detailing.  Two days and 14 hours later the 2008 BMW 335i looks pretty good but still needs some work.  My goal was not to try to remove every scuff as I had other stuff I had to get done this weekend like mowing the yard since the rain finally stopped briefly.  So did a light polish over the whole car and removed a few easily noticeable scuffs using my favorite product from Griots Garage. The car originally came from downtown Chicago and therefore did not get much love'in. It was hand washed at a Chicago car wash but I don't think they used the best quality towels.  The nose and the hood will need painting from all of the highway driving that the car previously went though.  The nose feels like it was hit with a sand blaster and the hood has a few big deep chips from bouncing rocks.  There are a few other rock chips on the car but I think I can take care of those.  All and all I am pleased with how it turned out and I got the chance to see what areas of the car need more aggressive polishing to remove some of the snow brush and towel marks.

TV Pow!

I am not sure why I thought about this today, but I remembered being up at my Grandpa's in upper Wisconsin and seeing this TV video game show where the kid that was choosen yelled POW into the phone to control a video game.  It was pretty crappy but you did find yourself playing along.

Did a quick search and found this nice blog on the topic

Justice

So many times lately coming up to a yellow light and you stop and the guy next to you blows through the red light and you think… where is a cop ? Well today I saw a guy next to me who looked lime they were not going to stop and sure enough he goes through the light. But… then a cop swings out of the turn lane and pulls him over. There is justice !

New ac unit for computer room

P145

The new ac unit for the computer room was installed today and man is it silent. It is one of the Mitsubishi split units. It took the installers most if the day but they got it in and I think we could store meat in there it gets so cold. Now to fine tune it and find the optimal temp settings.
